Statue Cruises understands how disappointed the students, chaperones, teachers and parents of Terrill Middle School are that the 5th graders couldn’t go on their long-planned field trip today. We are sorry for the disappointment and anger, and we hope both of those feelings will dissipate quickly.
We’d like to address what happened and why, what steps we are taking to improve the experience of this group and what we learned from the experience today.
Of the groups (and individual passengers) waiting to board the 10:30 AM ferry, there were two school groups. One was a group of over 400 students from a school about a two and half hour drive away. The other was the Terrill Middle School group of 200 students with a forty-five minute drive. A line supervisor realized that there was only room for one of these groups on this departure and made the choice to move the bigger group with the longer ride home to the front to ensure they made the trip.
Now, somewhere along the way, someone in that group (clarification: the larger group, not Terrill Middle School) dropped the name of our COO and VP and somehow the story became that his children were in that group and that’s why they were moved up. This is absolutely untrue. Our COO doesn’t know anyone associated with that group or school and made no promises or assurances that they would be able to have any sort of priority boarding.
The decision was based on the other group having a longer ride home.
It is unfortunate that Terrill Middle School was unable to wait for the next ferry, which departed 25 minutes later, but that was the choice the chaperones and teachers made. They were not turned away or asked to leave.
We have refunded the cost of their tickets, parking and bus transportation and we have re-booked them, free of charge, for next week. On that visit we are offering a pizza party for them on the ferry and supplying each child with a foam crown.
We learned a few important lessons today, and one those is giving our line supervisors more training in explaining decisions to people who are upset. We’ll work on communication skills with our whole team and we hope we are never in this situation again.
We thank the Terrill Middle School community for understanding and we look forward to seeing you soon!
